The Architecture of Fitchburg's Factories Presented by the Fitchburg Historical Society

Join Central Mass AIA and the Fitchburg Historical Society for a talk that will explore the rich history and unique design of Fitchburg's historic factories.

The program features a presentation by Sara E. Wermiel, a consulting historian of building construction and the construction industry who researches and writes about the history of buildings, industries (e.g., construction, textile manufacturing, fire insurance), and firms. She has a Ph.D. from MIT and her specialty is high-tech construction materials of the nineteenth century: structural iron and steel, structural hollow tile, concrete and reinforced concrete. She publishes and presents her research widely and has taught at Boston University, Boston Architectural College and MassArt.

At this talk, she will look at the development of factories and industrial architecture, using Fitchburg’s collection of historic factories as her examples.

The program will be at 6pm on October 23 and 1.0 LU from AIA is available with registration and attendance at this program.
